Can paper be transparent ?

  • Yes, to a certain extent, but not like glass. Paper is made from natural fibres and these are by nature not transparent. Paper can be made translucent, i.e. transmitting light.
  • Translucency is achieved by very long grinding (called “beating”) the fibre mass as is done for high-density greaseproof paper or tracing papers. Another way is to parchmentize paper in a sulphuric acids bath followed by extensive washing.
