How can paper be made glossy ?
- Paper can be glossy either on one side or on both sides. The techniques to do this are different.
- Paper that is smooth (or even glossy) on one side is made on a special paper machine that contains a very large heated (so-called “Yankee”) cylinder against which the still wet paper is pressed. The result is an MG (= machine-glazed) paper that is mainly used for bags and other packaging materials.
- In order to get gloss on both sides of the sheet, paper has to pass a so-called super calendar, in which the paper web passes under pressure through a set of rollers that in fact “polish” the paper surface.
