How precisely can the thickness of paper be controlled?

Very precisely. The thickness, or calliper, of paper is first of all controlled on the paper machine and after that more precisely in the super calendaring process.

A very exact thickness is for instance needed for self-adhesive label papers. When the labels are ‘die-cut” the cutting blade must cut out the label but may not penetrate in the underlying release paper. This being a matter of microns, requires a very precise thickness of both the label paper and the release liner.
