What is transfer metallizing ?

Transfer metallizing is a process whereby first a thin plastic film is metallized in the vacuum process (see question 15).

In a second step the metallic layer is transferred from the plastic film to paper in a calendaring process. An advantage of transfer metallizing is that also rough surface papers can be metallized.
