Who are entitled to "certify" a forest ?
Forests are certified by international auditing associations, such as for instance PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).
The PEFC Council is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests
The FSC, founded in 1993, is an independent, not for profit, non-government organisation based in Bonn, Germany, that provides standard setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services for companies and organisations interested in responsible forestry.
